TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo mandated the new Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi to resolve the recent issue with “social commerce”, social media which molded itself into an e-commerce marketplace. “That will be the new minister’s duty,” said Jokowi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, on Monday, July 17, 2023.
Jokowi also said to place full attention on technological advancement these days. “I disclose every issue at hand to be accelerated and resolved, they are not easy. E-commerce develops at a rapid pace these days,” he said.
To show his concern, President Jokowi added a Deputy Minister position at Kominfo and planned a task force to assist Kominfo. “Because the pace of world advancement depends on Infomation and Communication of Technology,” said Jokowi.
The newly appointed Kominfo Minister said that the ministry will swiftly carry out the President’s instruction to form a task force. “Everyone will move swiftly,” said Budi at the Presidential Palace, in Jakarta, on Monday, July 17, 2023.
Previously, the Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs Teten Masduki proposed that only foreign products over US$100 will be allowed to enter Indonesia through social commerce, namely TikTok Shop. He believed this is a necessary measure to protect local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMSEs). “Anything under that price range, local businesses already have. So, we only need foreign products we can’t make,” said Teten when met at Le Meridien in Jakarta, on Monday, July 17, 2023.
Teten also urged the Ministry of Trade to amend Minister of Trade Regulation No. 50 of 2022 concerning Business Licensing, Advertising, Development of and Supervision of E-Commerce Business Practitioners since it does not provide articles on social commerce. Meanwhile, technological advancement resulted in new shopping behavior that combines e-commerce and social media. “Our SMSEs will not survive competition with products designed with sturdy market information. This is no longer about trends, but behavior,” said Teten. “The government needs to protect that.”
