TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo highlighted the issue of actualized investments outside Java Island, which accounted for 52 percent of the national total. According to Jokowi, this portion should have been bigger than that.
“We have 17,000 islands. How come in just one island, Java, the investment reached 48 percent. Why do the other 16,999 islands only get 52 percent? It should be bigger,” he said when attending the 2023 Investment National Coordination Meeting in Kuningan, South Jakarta on Thursday, December 7.
Jokowi reminded the Ministry of Investment Affairs to encourage regional heads and heads of one-stop integrated services (PTSP) to increase investment outside Java. The government is also preparing the supporting infrastructure outside Java.
The Ministry of Investment Affairs/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) noted that from January to September 2023, investment realization outside Java stood at Rp545.8 trillion or 51.8 percent of the total Rp1,053.1 trillion. In Java, Rp507.3 trillion or 48.2 percent of the investments were actualized.
On the same occasion, the Minister of Investment Affairs/Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia said investment outside Java from 2020 to the third quarter of 2023 was bigger than in Java. He even gave the example of Central Sulawesi, aka Central Sulawesi, which could beat several provinces on the island of Java.
“The [foreign investment] in Central Sulawesi beats Jakarta, beats East Java, beats Central Java,” said Bahlil.
