ASEAN Summit; Labuan Bajo Port Temporarily Halts Operation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Directorate General of Land Transport at the Transportation Ministry provides 25 minibus units in Labuan Bajo, Nusa Tenggara, to support the ASEAN Summit slated to be held on May 9-11. They also prepared relocation of installation of street lighting equipment, as well as built bus stops and installed road safety facilities.

“We provide 25 minibus units. Twenty units will serve [passengers] from and to the airport, hotels and the venues of the event, and five spare minibusses,” said the ministry’s land transport director-general Hendro Sugiatno in a written statement on Saturday, May 6.

There will be 30 drivers who had been trained to acknowledge the track and road conditions. A ramp check has also been done as a safety measure, said Hendro.

The ministry will also implement several traffic engineering, he explained, to manage traffic situations to avoid traffic jams during the ASEAN Summit. It planned to impose the one-way system, on-street parking, and temporarily divert the loading and unloading of goods transport vehicles from the Labuan Bajo ferry port to the Wae Kelambu Multi-Purpose Port.

“We also temporarily stop the operation of the Labuan Bajo Port starting from May 6 to 11, and it will be diverted to Wae Kelambu so as not to hinder ASEAN Summit activities. The service will be diverted to the Badas-Wae Kelambu route with KM. Swarna Bahtera vessels,” he said.

Hendro added that his office had relocated 45 units of street lightning equipment; 23 units at the airport roads and 22 units at Jalan Mgr. Van Beakum.

The ministry also installed 200 water barriers and 100 traffic cones to support the traffic engineering procedure that would be executed by the NTT transportation department.

“We’ve also built three bus stops; at the airport, Kampung Ujung bus stop, and Simpang Pede stop,” said Hendro.

As for the road safety facilities, they have installed traffic signs, RPPJ, road nails, street lightning, delineator, and guardrail marks. “Hope this support will help to succeed the ASEAN Summit as well as ease the mobility of the participants during the event,” he remarked.
